“If it gets hot or cold, we fix it”

Growing up in Connecticut, I thought I should go to trade school instead of regular high school. I didn’t feel like I was going to go to college and being the youngest in a large family, I had seen my brothers go to trade school and create good career paths for themselves. There, I was introduced to the HVAC industry. I found its diversity quite appealing. I often say “If it gets hot or cold, we fix it.” and to an extent there is a component of HVAC in just about everything. Heading off to work in the morning feels like an adventure as you never know what lies ahead. Sometimes you get diamonds; sometimes you get coal.

In the early part of my career, I learned a lot about electrical controls, refrigeration components, and heating/cooling applications. I also learned about the satisfaction of a job well done and how it felt to save the day (or the ice cream, or the pipes from freezing, or the a/c on that 95 degree day). Most good technicians have a bit of a hero syndrome that compels them to rise to the occasion.

What's in a name?

After working for others for years, I decided it was time to have my own business. When I thought about what I wanted to call the company, I felt like it was important to talk about the solid work I wanted the company to do, and came up with Cornerstone Mechanical, which I was pretty happy with. A little later, I was talking with my father, and realized that I wouldn’t be starting the company if it wasn’t for him. He raised seven of us, instilling in us the values we have. So I kept the motto “Quality is our cornerstone”, but named the company Climates by Pomeroy, after him.

I put everything I’ve learned over the last 35 years in the industry to work at Climates by Pomeroy. As an outdoorsman, it gives me a deep sense of pride to focus my company’s efforts in low-emission, high-efficiency solutions for customer comfort needs. HVAC is one of the largest users of resources on our planet, but the past 20 years have been full of incredible advances and all of us at Climates by Pomeroy feel compelled to embrace them. We can now heat and cool with a much smaller energy footprint. These marvels definitely inspire someone with as many years in the trade as me to learn as much as possible. It is very fun.

More than just a job

Our company works hard to build a family feel for our employees. We work as a team and really try to lift each other up at work – you have to enjoy what you’re doing, or it’s just a job. Because of that, we have a well-trained group of employees that we invest in so they can be happy, raise families, and feel pride about what we do. In the end, we are out working hard every day at a thing we like to do in the best interest of our community. As a business owner, I feel like I have the ability – and the responsibility – to benefit the group around me that gives their time and effort toward our common goals. That is a pretty nice way to feel when you step out the door in the A.M.
